【Procreate】Still Life Painting Challenge in 1 hour【iPad】

Hello. This is Metaron.

I'm getting a little familiar with the Procreate iPad app and would like to do a nice still life painting. But it seems difficult to draw a traditional painting digitally. I'd love to see the actual drawing process!

For those who are interested in this, this article will tell you the process I went through to copy a still-life image in Procreate (about 1 hour), as well as tips and tricks I learned from the actual drawing process and recommendations for using the tool.

The general procedure is as follows.

1. draw in lines and take notes

2. apply base color

3. darken overall

4. use a pencil brush to take shape

5. apply intrinsic color

6. draw textures and details

7. finish with overall balance

I will explain in more detail below.

Model image for this issue

At first glance, I thought it was beautiful. I wanted to create the feeling that the rich color of honey and the orange-color of the tangerines are in harmony.

First, draw in lines

Draw a rough shape and shadow, and write down what you feel as a memo.

It is easier to visualize the picture you are aiming for if you draw what you want to draw in particular.

Brush used: 6B (pencil)

Add color to each still life, regardless of what color is visible.

At this stage, a very rough touch is fine, but it will be easier to see the next step if you trace the form of each object, such as the standing bottle or the round shape of the tangerine.

Brush used: acrylic

Pour the base color and add various colors.

Since the example image is a still life that seems to float on a dark background, fill in the background with a darker color.

Using a pencil brush to capture shapes

In the darkened area, use pencil lines to delicately create shapes.

It's a good idea to add shadows and a three-dimensional effect along with the shapes with lines!

Brush used: 6B (pencil)

Paint each unique color as if it were a coloring book.

After observing the colors and shapes, create a new upper layer and paint the colors you see, such as brown for honey, orange for tangerines, and white for flowers, as in a coloring book. Use the selection tool to set the area to be painted and then fill in the colors to fill in the small shapes.

Once the colors are painted, lower the opacity of the layer until it looks natural.

Painting in textures and shapes

At this stage, it is easy to create an oil painting-like texture by integrating (flattening) several separate layers and using the color picker and blur tool extensively.

The color picker is useful because it allows you to set the color of one part of the screen as the color of the brush. For example, you can smoothly draw the outline of white petals, correct the outline with a dark background color, and then draw the edge again with a white color.

Observe the model image carefully and add details little by little, such as the thick transparency of the honey or the white fibers of the tangerine's tufts.

Two or three brushes may be enough.

In traditional painting techniques such as still-life painting, the artist paints by moving his or her hand rapidly, so once a brush is chosen, it is better not to choose a new one, so that the artist can concentrate on painting.

In this case, I used mostly acrylics and 6B (pencil).

By combining the blur tool, a variety of expressions can be achieved even with a limited number of brushes.

Check the entire project and details for completion.

Time is up here this time. I was able to proceed to the point where the texture was starting to look fun.

What do you think?

It would be fun to paint a casual yet authentic picture digitally!

I will try various ways of drawing again and let you know.
